About Us
What is Chatham Voices for Justice?
(Formerly Jumpstart Chatham)
Chatham Voices for Justice (CVJ) is a grassroots, progressive organization of volunteers in Chatham County, North Carolina that works to promote equal rights and equal participation in our democracy for all county residents.
Our organization grew out of the Jumpstart the Vote initiative of Democracy NC and began with a small group of Chatham County members of Carolina Jews for Justice. CVJ is not a membership organization, but rather, a network of individuals of a variety of religious and ethnic backgrounds who are interested in volunteer opportunities that promote equal participation and justice.
The coordinators work to disseminate information about these opportunities and to organize events that promote our goals. In the past few years, we have organized voter registration events in Pittsboro and Siler City, monitored the meetings of our county Board of Elections, provided exit support for voters leaving the polls, participated in numerous “Moral Monday” demonstrations and in the annual HKonJ (Historic Thousands on Jones Street) demonstration in Raleigh, and traveled to Winston-Salem to lend our support to those protesting against the restrictive new voting law in our state.
We have also disseminated information about other progressive organizations that might be of interest to our network, such as initiatives to establish a living wage and to reduce gun violence. In order to be efficient and not “reinvent the wheel,” we try to coordinate with other like-minded organizations in the area, including Democracy NC, the League of Women Voters, You Can Vote, the NAACP, Neighbors On Call (NoC), Indivisible, and Carolina Jews for Justice. Links to these organizations are provided on the Other Organizations page.
Our Events page lists our current and future 2024 events and our prior 2016-2022 events.
You can volunteer to help with or participate in our events. If you would like to be on our mailing list, please sign up on the Join Us page. We promise not to clutter your inbox; our emails are only occasional. We will not share your information with anyone without your permission.
We are an all-volunteer organization, have no budget, and are not incorporated. If you would like to donate money to support any of our causes, please consider one of the partner organizations listed on the Other Organizations page.
